Background
After a decade of collaboration focused on measure and affect, creative practice and cultural geography, the artist Barry and Keane continue to produce NTRO and TRO research outputs that include performative and participatory installations, video and photo work, journal articles and books (one published and a second forthcoming). This work continues the ongoing fascination with measure, focusing on the affects of Covid-19 impact on our sense and sensation of space. The creative works are unpacked in journal articles and in the forthcoming new book on provisional and bridging measures.
Contribution
The artwork contributes to the growing compendium that address the experiences of Covid-19 and the impact and affects upon daily life, mental health right down to a sense of self and one’s perception of the environment. Additionally, practice-led research informs Barry and Keane’s writings that focus on the intersection of individual and collective experience and the ways in which standard concepts of measure correlate with one’s perception and use of measures in the production of daily life.
Significance
The exhibition is connected to a Mobilities Conference hosted by Lancaster University (UK) and Aalborg University (DK) in Denmark where research across cultural geography and geo-humanities intersect in and through the arts. This work sits in an area gaining in importance and addressing the impacts of climate change social justice on the collective production of society and culture especially instrumental approaches to progress. Practice led research is a way to contribute to this growing inquiry by emphasising the material, participatory and geo-political factors.Publication classification
