‘Look Up’ is a one-person multi-media installation space disguised as an old-style phone box. Located in a large open space next to the Victoria Market, the installation uses field recordings of nature and spoken word intersected with visual texts to elevate audience experience.
Research statement
Background
The rise of singular, immersive encounters within performance practice has positioned it as a leading field in creating personalised & captivating audience interactions in the wake of significant events. The lockdowns imposed by COVID-19 led to serious limitations in movement across neighbourhoods & communities, & compressed our social worlds to a 2D flat screen version of others. This decrease in social mobility has resulted in an increase in anxiety disorders (Lancet 2021; 398: 1700–12). This research project investigates the ways in which sonic dramaturgies in small spaces can create opportunities for passersby to experience restful moments in urban spaces
Contribution
‘Look Up’ is a one-person installation space disguised as an old-style phone box.The installation uses field recordings of nature & spoken word intersected with visual texts to elevate audience experience. This heightened experience creates a moment of embodied attention for the passerby as they enter the enclosed box from the noisy outdoor space, acting as a direct counterpoint to the kinds of distanced interactions humans have experienced in lockdown. The research troubles typical responses to live encounters by using sound as the dramaturgical consideration: such that quiet, purposeful, intentional listening is positioned at the centre of the encounter.
Significance
‘Look Up’ was curated into Melbourne Fringe’s 2022 ‘Public Art Park’ programme of innovative and experimental public art works at Testing Grounds, which is Melbourne’s premier experimental art space providing temporary infrastructure for creative practice. Installed at Market Square, inclusion in the Public Art Park event was a competitive application process.
