engResearch statement
Background LostRoomII (2017) explores optics in glass, highlighting the phenomenon of total internal reflection through the playful revealing of a hidden ‘room’ that was fabricated through the use of digitally constructed 3D printed forms. It queries: how can the creative application of total internal reflection be used to create two distinct viewing realms, based upon the viewers perspective, within a particular sculptural form? Contribution The phenomenon of total internal reflection, explicitly derived from the material form, was interrogated for its potential application in the amalgamation of digital animation and innovative screening device/surfaces. This research outcome successfully contributed new knowledge to this area of study and its findings will be applied to future research projects. Significance This work was selected and curated for exhibition as part of the LightTime Exhibition, Science Works Museum, which was open from July 1 2017 until April 2018, and was viewed by over one million visitors.Publication classification
