Research statement

This work is part of a research investigation into subjectivity via the idea of landscape. Landscape in turn is explored as a problem space that is both implicated in, and analogous to, the problem of consciousness. The research argues that landscape studies may be deepened by scientific investigations into consciousness and conversely, that arts-based researchers (as reflexive generators of experience) provide a complementary way of entering discourses (and testing theories) in consciousness studies. NTRO methodologies explore the landscape idea as a space of uncertain and unstable dualities between self and non-self, subject and object, the part and the whole – dualities that also haunt consciousness studies. Current studio research emphasises the relationship between (attempted) separation and (unintentional) integration as a potential trigger of the sublime. The notion of "mutual contamination" reverberates with current challenges in the environment, namely widespread bush fires and viral pandemic.
