Research statement

Background Live performance within the visual arts has evolved from Happenings (Kaprow) and post-modern dance practices (of the 1960s and 1970s New York, to include relational aesthetics (Bourriard 1998). Although many visual artists escaped the white cube temporarily, many returned to it as they became successful or historically important (Smithson, Morris). Therefore, the origins of these practices in the visual arts are still relevant to contemporary arts practice, including the methods employed that are still politically relevant and subversive, despite a perception that contemporary art practices are more experimental than they were at that time. Contribution My performance and installation Nothing New was the opening work in a live-art program in the city of Graz, Austria curated by Veronica Hauer. For this, I undertook a peer-reviewed application process, that included the Styrian government Cultural Department, local artists and curators in the region. In addition, the work developed was created during an internationally competitive, peer-reviewed residency, awarded by the Styrian Government. This residency is a prestigious and competitive International residency program that offered in-kind and financial award of $15,000 in the form of 3 months accommodation and studio access, and a $1500 EU/month stipend. Significance This installation performance used strict principles; that I buy nothing new to create my work, that I work in public space & use materials found or borrowed during my time in the city. This created a relational experience between myself, the city residents, artists, local suppliers and neighbours. I staged my exhibition in public space, utilising a public laneway where the piece used the sonic landscape (local church bells), as well as text-based works that communicated the scored aspect of my improvised choreography. It was performed to over 100 invited and incidental audience members, shared on Instagram-live and shared globally through social media.
