Penumbra refers to the interplay of light and dark especially associated with a solar eclipse. In this work, the passage of light between the Earth and Sun is sculpturally intercepted by a woven and hovering form, suspended between trees and composed entirely of Livistona australis palm fronds collected on site. Casting an array of diffuse shadows, this invites a moment of reflection for a commonplace plant: a valuable resource for Indigenous people for millennia for food, medicine, shelter and the making of twine as well as 18th century colonists who crafted its material into distinctive ‘Cabbage Palm hats’.
