Background
Performative and embodied experiences in and of nature are emerging as key influences in performing arts this decade. The experience of listening to natural sounds alters the body’s chemistry and can act to rest the nervous system. Using a creative practice approach this research investigated audio visual installation as a process of participatory engagement to expand the dynamic experience of listening aurally, kinesthetically, haptically, and as a mode of connection – to self, to others, to the cosmos. The result is a bespoke immersive sensory experience that performs the ‘vastness of the sky’ as a way evoke a sense of connection for individuals,
Contribution
Sky Symphony is a private solo experience for the audience. Installed within a purpose-built box (2m x 1.2m x 1.6m) with a blackened interior and a swing door for easy access, it draws on the immersive potential of sound, light, and video. An investigation of meaning and connection through sensory and affective experience and in collaboration with the cosmos. Composed of ambient natural sounds - bird call and insect hum - juxtaposed with humanmade noises such as a soaring aeroplane the artwork interweaves voice recordings from six people of varying ages, ethnicities, and locations, sharing insights about their relationship with the sky.
Significance
Through a posthuman approach to dramaturgy, the artwork intentionally troubles human centred understandings of contemporary performance practice in collaboration with the natural world. The research reveals the potentiality in the ways in which our environment affects our processes as researchers/makers, and the ways in which our embodied processes might affect environment. Further, works that are staged or presented outdoor must attend to space with the sensibility of dramaturgical concepts such as distance, expanse, scale and access.
