Research statement

Snuggle (Pink) is a painting curated into the exhibition Paint Versus Colour by curators Michael Graeve and Christoph Dahlhausen at Five Walls Gallery in Melbourne. The 300 x 300 ml work investigates the complex relationship between colour in contemporary art and its sometimes fraught relationship to paint as the key conventional technology of abstract art. The work seeks to challenge key orthodoxies in the conception and fabrication of geometric artworks by utilising innovative materials in the making of an abstract 'painting' Working with neoprene and plastic industrial webbing, the work utilises decidedly non- high art materials to push into potentially new terrain in the examination of abstraction as a contemporary art language or modality. In utilising materials known more for their capacity to protect the body (wet suits) or act as an insulating mechanism to keep beverages cold, this research sought to find new ways of connecting art with life and in particular to establish a connection between so-called modernist high art and the everyday. The exhibition held at Melbourne gallery Five Walls was curated by leading German artist Christoph Dahlhausen and RMIT researcher Michael Graeve and featured the work of forty international practitioners from 7 different countries across Europe, Asia and Australasia.
