Research statement

Background The Greater Good Project is a non-profit online community that shares and promotes sustainable living and social inclusion. The community aims to present clear, factual information on how small things that individuals do to help the planet and each other can make a difference. They required development of their brand due to not being active for the past 2 years. The research explored the development of brand stories through authentic branding that represents social consciousness in a factual manner. The project explores the research question of “how might we use symbols to draw connections between individuals, communities, science and the environment to communicate togetherness and support for positive change?” Contribution The research drew on theories of semiotics as well as the use of simple graphics. Drawing on childhood creative observations of equations such as “1 + 1 = window”, the idea of using an equation to reflect simple science yet unexpected outcomes contributes to the uniqueness of the brand and its ability to appeal to a wide audience. I was responsible for developing the brand strategy, logo design and brand application. Significance The brand story was competitively selected to be implemented by the online community on their Facebook page, with over 30,000 followers, as a banner and the logo as their profile picture. Posters have been developed and printed for display at events.
