For The Ladder Awry Dirk de Bruyn has created three projections. Two of these are located outside the window of the north gallery; a third is projected inside the gallery. Each of the outside projections consist of two streams of images, one laid over the other. The third projection is a rolling text written by Paul Carter, some of which is back to front but whose reflection in the window is legible. An important source of the imagery is 'Opening (animation 2011) with dancer-choreographer Soo Yeun You. The object of the present reworking is to create a field of visual activity that references the ladder/filmstrip analogy both physically and historically. Dirk de Bruyn's cinematic exploration of the migrant tradition uniquely tracks themes of suspension, passage, ambiguity and distress through a physical engagement with the rapidly evolving field of digital recording and post-production technologies.
