As part of the Venice Architecture Biennale, this ECC exhibition, is the most significant international event for the architecture community. In 2021 it is both a physical and a virtual event. This has escalated the numbers of viewers of the exhibition. http://timespaceexistence.com/
TIME SPACE EXISTENCE features completed and ongoing projects, innovative proposals, and utopian dreams of architectural expressions. Through a wide selection of projects ranging from conceptual works, models, photographs, videos, sculptures, to site specific installations, participants are questioning our relationship with space and time, re-envisioning new ways of living and re-thinking architecture through a larger lens.
VENICE ARCHITECTURE BIENNALE
The 17th International Architecture Exhibition runs from 22 May to 21 November 2021, curated by architect and scholar Hashim Sarkis. “We need a new spatial contract. In the context of widening political divides and growing economic inequalities, we call on architects to imagine spaces in which we can generously live together”, Sarkis has commented.
Research statement
Venetian Blinds is a way of encountering Venice through Terrazzo. The paper geometries are - altered and translated - into viewing devices - as way of looking at Venice through the burden of the migrant house. New geometries are folded into telescopic devices. Added to these are the imageries – partially erased drawings and representations of migrant house tell-tale details, well-travelled from Melbourne to Venice (inversing/repeating/migratory travels). Migrant houses evoke labour, work, collective force, as well as uncertainty, shared loss, emptiness. The weight of life in a suitcase. Venetian Blinds points to the blindspots of Venice, what is only seen secretly, or perversely, or not at all. Its diaspora and diversity are distant. What are the tell-tales of Venice? The viewing devices invite alternate ways to view Venice – finding other tales within its well-used narratives of beauty and commerce; and other tales altogether. The optical apparatus that offered pictorial details of migrant houses now becomes the frames for viewing Venice.
The migrant houses become beautiful as representation.
Venetian Blinds exhibited as part of the European Cultural Centre (ECC) Exhibition, Space Time Existence. It is a part of a series of explorations of the visual presence and perception of migrant architecture, with two works Terrazzo (2019, Melbourne) and Terrazzo-Doges (2019, Venice Art Biennale).
