Research statement
Background
This site-specific collaborative work responds to the curatorial premise by exploring how Venice's, culture, and daily life can be captured through emerging technologies while preserving cultural immersion for digital audiences. By dematerializing Venice’s architecture, the project examines the urban structures supporting the city's social, cultural, and economic activities. Blending architectural exploration, light refraction, and geometric abstraction, it redefines our perception of Venice, encouraging deep, slow interaction with its built environment—an environment that may be underwater within 30 years.
Contribution
This work redefines our understanding of Venice by using emerging technologies to dematerialize its iconic architecture, offering a fresh perspective on urban environments. By blending architectural exploration, light refraction, and geometric abstraction, the project challenges traditional views of the city and invites deeper, more thoughtful engagement with its cultural heritage. It highlights the fragility of Venice, not just as a cultural and historical treasure, but as a city under threat from environmental changes that could submerge it within decades.
Significance
This collaborative work, created with the European Cultural Commission and showcased at the Venice Biennale, carries deep cultural and artistic significance. By blending emerging technologies with traditional concepts of place and architecture, it bridges Venice’s rich historical heritage with its uncertain future. The Venice Biennale, known for challenging artistic boundaries, offers a global stage for this project, amplifying its impact. Through the dematerialization of architecture, the work invites reflection on Venice’s cultural identity and its vulnerability to environmental and technological changes, urging proactive preservation.
