Research statement
Background
Gender visibility and the imbalance of women’s contribution to beer, brewing and production has resulted in optics that showcase men as the primary generators, receivers, and knowledge holders in this domain (Wright, 2014). An imbalance visible in advertising and marketing of beer to male audiences; and erasure of women in industry and history books. This research seeks to unravel this erasure applying the Research through Design (Zimmerman, 2006) method, to develop research and the production of women’s contribution drawing on qualitative sources in material culture. This resulted in a cross-disciplinary approach concluding in new insights into the subject.
Contribution
As researcher and exhibition designer, I was commissioned to develop the ‘History of Women in Beer- his/her story’ to make visible the hidden contributions of women in the history of beer for Victorian Good Beer Week 2023. I led the research to shape insights from heritage databases, inc. the National Trust and State Library repositories to curate content into a cohesive critical chronicle informing audiences of the substantial contributions of women to this industry. The curatorial approach uncovered the obscured - culminating in the development of 5 large format exhibition panels emphasizing the often-hidden contribution of women in this fascinating area.
Significance
The exhibition was developed for Good Beer Week 2023, an initiative of the Independent Brewers Association of Australia and the Australian International Beer Awards to educate the public about good beer and support the local industry. Attendance figures run in excess of 75,000 over 10 days for the annual event. Sponsored by The Fox Hotel the resulting exhibition brings to light diverse contributions of women to the history of beer both in Australia and internationally.
