AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL'S INDIGENOUS HISTORY Towards a new understanding

The article by Hocking and Reidy in the Winter issue of Meanjin tries and fails to revive a myth about links between indigenous games and the origins of Melbourne, later Australian, football. In doing so it diverts attention from a much more powerful story about indigenous attempts to ‘reverse-colonise’ the sport in the second half of the nineteenth century. Australian football has an indigenous history but it is not the one presented by Hocking and Reidy. This paper paves the way for a critical reinterpretation what was taking place in the second half of the nineteenth century. It also has implications for the way the contribution of indigenous people to the game is presented today.
