Abstract A growing number of people use digital health apps to address various health issues. The main objective of our study was to investigate lifestyle factors that play a significant role in either facilitating or hindering the utilization of digital health applications, with a specific focus on mindfulness and cognitive training apps. An online survey was launched between July 2023 and February 2024. The study recruited 410 healthy participants in the age range between 18 and 55 years. We used correlation and multiple regression analyses to identify relationships between engagement in physical activity, mental health activities, social media usage, and mindfulness and brain training app usage. Our research utilized a multiple regression model to identify the predictors of mindfulness and brain training app usage. We found that physical exercise (b = 0.18, p = 0.006) and mental health activities (b = 0.22, p < 0.001) are predictors of mindfulness app usage. The storage domain of the working memory questionnaire was negatively associated with mindfulness app usage (b =  − 0.01, p < 0.02). Furthermore, mindfulness app usage was the sole predictor of brain training app usage (b = 0.22, p < 0.0001). Our findings indicate that people who prioritize self-care by engaging in activities like regular physical exercise and mental health practices such as journaling are more likely to be interested in downloading and using mindfulness apps. Additionally, individuals who experience subjective difficulties with working memory are more likely to use mindfulness apps. These findings have implications for health professionals.
