A constitutive model for unidirectional fiber reinforced composite is proposed to utilize three-dimensional finite element simulation. This proposed model is developed based on two-dimensional Hashin criteria and Lapczyk damage model which are built in the commercial software ABAQUS. In this work, it is presented a new approach to calculate the damage variable incrementally, and is extended to the 3D constitutive model using the property of transverse isotropy to define the corresponding damage variable. In the validation, the proposed 3D model is compared with the results of the original 2D plane stress model for the proportional loading conditions with one element. To test general 3D problems, a notch laminate problem and ballistic example are modelled. In this process, it is discussed the necessity of the 3D constitutive model.
