This paper presents a novel reduced-order state observer for large-scale discrete-time systems. The dynamics of the reduced-order observer are derived based only on a set of unstable and/or poorly damped eigenvalues of the system. It is shown that arbitrarily chosen dynamics can be assigned to the observer. A simple and systematic design method is presented. A numerical example is given to illustrate the properties of the new observer and its design method.
