Antimicrobial stewardship – a systematic approach to ensure appropriate antimicrobial prescribing – is essential in general practice to reduce the emergence of antimicrobial resistance locally and globally, as well as to minimise cost and reduce patient-specific adverse effects associated with inappropriate prescribing of antibiotics.
