When Charles Robinette arrived in Adelaide in 1875 there was already a burgeoning proliferation of literature about garden design and garden structures available in Australia. Most of this literature was coming from England, but a lot of German horticultural literature and catalogues made their way to South Australia because of the high percentage of German settlers. The latter established a strong profile in horticulture and botanical inquiry unprecedented in the rest of Australia. While many artisan and professional gardeners arrived and gained employment on estates and gardens, there were few individuals that specialized in one sector of horticulture and landscape design.
