Perfusion is a principal determinant of
muscle function, as is evident from
impaired myocardial contraction during
ischaemia. Perfusion determines solute
exchange between blood and tissues, and
is tightly regulated by local and central
mechanisms. Here, we discuss how exercise
and insulin regulate muscle perfusion,
focusing on the control of microvascular
surface area or ‘recruitment’.
