This article reflects on the history of the scholarly journal, Australasian Drama Studies, assessing its contribution to theatre and performance scholarship over the journal’s forty-year history. It demonstrates some of the ways in which theatre and performance as the objects of study, along with the discourses employed to describe and interrogate them, have evolved in
response to wider currents of social and intellectual life in our region. In addition, it critiques recent shifts in the measurement of research quality and impact, and considers the value and sustainability of scholarship with a local focus.
