Exiles on Mainstream: The Rise of Alternative Art Schools and What it Means for Universities
Research statement
This essay served as the editorial text for an issue I co-edited for NITRO journal on alternative art schools. The text sought to locate the changing face of art education and specifically the challenge so-called alternative art schools are making to university creative arts programmes.
Using the key exemplars of The School of the Damned in the UK and Alternative Art School based in the USA but delivered online, this study highlighted the ways in which changes to funding and resourcing in recent higher education changes in Australia have created the pre-conditions from which new models of private and collective art education have formed.Publication classification
