First episode schizophrenia studies span biological, neuropsychological, psychopathological and epidemiological research. This review summarizes the main themes in these fields. An emerging trend in first episode research is that of early intervention and secondary prevention in schizophrenia, which is aimed at reducing morbidity and improving outcome through increased attention to the onset and early phase of the illness. Major advances in this area are highlighted.
