Hadotian Considerations on Buddhist Spiritual Practices

journal contribution
posted on 2019-12-31, 00:00 authored by Matthew Sharpe, Eli Kramer
This review essay first examines the turn to Pierre Hadot's methodology as a means to open up new approaches to understanding Buddhist philosophy which guides Fiordalis et al's *Buddhist Spiritual Practices*. We then examine the three key topoi that emerge from this approach: a heightened interest in schools, practices, and genres of philosophical writing and activity. The second half of the essay critically evaluates some of the key essays' claims concerning the application of Hadot's work in this field, notably turning on how to understand the idea of "spiritual exercises."
