This paper examines the trade-off between jobs vs. the environment in a vertically linked model. Imposing higher pollution taxes on upstream firms leads to a contraction of the industry and hence rising unemployment. This reduces the demand for final goods, further damaging the upstream sector. The cumulative damaging effect triggered by higher unemployment could lead to less stringent pollution taxes for the protection of jobs.
