KHA-CARI has been developing guidelines de novo for an
Australian & New Zealand target audience since 1999.
KDIGO was set up in 2002 to explore the possibility of
developing international chronic kidney disease (CKD)
guidelines. The science and evidence based care of those with
CKD are universal and independent of geographical location/
national borders. It is important to avoid duplication of effort
by organizations and to efficiently use the available expertise
and resources. As a consequence KHA-CARI have committed
to adapting selected KDIGO guidelines to meet Australian
and New Zealand circumstances and requirements rather
than producing separate guidelines.
This summary guideline is an adaptation of the KDIGO
Clinical Practice Guideline for Acute Kidney Injury.1
The summary includes a brief description of the adaptation
methodology and the adapted recommendations and suggestions
for each subtopic. The complete KHA-CARI adapted
guideline can be accessed at the KHA-CARI website (http://
www.cari.org.au). The ultimate purpose of the adapted guideline
is to provide a comprehensive listing of recommendations
relevant to Australian and New Zealand practice following a
detailed review and update of the KDIGO guidelines.
