Australian society has been faced with the constant challenge of providing a variety of services (e.g., education, health, welfare, justice) that are able to meet the specific needs of people from culturally diverse backgrounds. More recently, a significant focus has been placed on meeting the needs of people from non-English speaking backgrounds (NESB). These demands have arisen primarily from demographic changes in Australia's population as a consequence of immigration policies which encouraged NESB migrants and, because of increased life expectancy, better nutrition, and health of people from NESB.
