Professor Hildreth has recently commented on the current state of coastal zone management in Australia. 1 In his paper he stated that he had not detected a great deal of "dissatisfaction" with Victorian coastal public land management but that there was still a need to link private and public land planning in a regional context. This article reviews the current state of Victorian coastal zone planning and management and considers some possible changes. The current Resources Assessment Commission inquiry into institutional arrangements on the Australian coast makes this review timely as does the election of a new (Coalition) State Government.
