This article examines recent Australian literary journals in relation to Australian literary culture more broadly. It argues that literary journals increasingly provide an extra-institutional means for Australian authors to make contacts within the publishing industry and advance their careers. In this sense, the recent proliferation of independent literary journals reflects a broader neoliberalisation of the role of the artist, which is increasingly entrepreneurial.
