Background
This research discussion paper brings together critical subject English research on the teaching of texts. It analyses the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 definition of text and deconstructs the theoretical positioning behind each part of the definitions to investigate how texts are situated within the English curriculum.
Contribution
This is the inaugural Research Discussion Paper produced by the Victorian Association for the Teaching of English. In examining the curriculum definition of ‘text’, I discuss themes and research that relate to each section of the definition. I argue that the Victorian Curriculum 2.0 definition inspires change in practices to ‘capture more of the world’ (Wright, 2019).
Significance
VATE has over 8000 members. This research discussion paper has been sent to all members. This work brings the definition of text in the new curriculum to light, tracking the theoretical basis of each aspect of the definition. The intention is to make the theoretical underpinnings visible.
