The preface of the book 'Teaching boys: Developing classroom practices that work', which is an important resource for practitioners and academics working in the area of boys’ education. This extract engages the reader with the day-to-day lives of a number of male students. The authors draw on these vignettes as an engaging backdrop for the exploration of generative approaches to addressing issues of masculinity in the education of boys. A key point made here is that the playing out of dominant masculinity can be harmful to the boys themselves but also to the successful learning of all students.
