As an English teacher, do you consider yourself a designer? Of curriculum? Of learning experiences? Of educational materials? The concept of the teacher-designer has taken a hit in recent decades, since the introduction of the Curriculum and Standards Frameworkin the 1990s ushered in thenotion that external constraints (beyond those provided by the VCE English syllabus) should frame what teachers and students do. This article describes a range of curriculum design methods that inform the current work of teachers, based on strategic research.
