A random State-wide survey of the Victorian population demonstrated clearly a wide discrepancy between the respondents' current nutritional intake and the pattern of intake recommended for improvement in the community's chronic disease profile. The results of the survey highlighted a range of methodological issues relevant to the recommendations of the Nutrition Task Force of the Better Health Commission relating to the need for ongoing surveillance of the nutritional profile and attitudes of the Australian community. It also demonstrated a surprising lack of change in the nutrient profile of the Australian community over the past few years despite various independent nutrition policy and education initiatives.
