The effect of boron on low-carbon rods and galvanized wires is discussed. Boron additions are effective for reducing the strength and improving the formability of low-carbon EAF steels for wire drawing. These improvements were caused by the ability of boron to remove free nitrogen from solution in ferrite as a nonstrengthening nitride. It has also proved effective in increasing the ductility of galvanized wires as measured by tensile elongation and by torsional twists to failure.
