Research statement

Background In China a comedian risks jail time for mocking the army. QIAN GONG and JIAN XU chart the rapid rise and potential fall of stand-up in the country. Contribution The commentary discusses the boundary of free speech and joke in China by taking the story of a banned stand-up comedian as an example. Significance This is a commentary piece on China's crackdown of the stand-up comedian. The piece was first published on the website of Index on Censorship and was later included in the journal of Index on Censorship published by Sage.
