Research statement
This article for the special Artlink issue on public art examines how new ideas of play and play architect turn have elided with key ideas in relation to temporary and permanent public art. Examining four recent practitioners from Australia and New ZealandBallinger Sanne Mestrom, Mike Hewsom, Cigdem Adeyemir and Ryan Ballinger, this essay seeks to interrogate theories of play outlined by Roger Caillois, Antony Vidler and Quentin Stevens and consider how notions of ludic engagement might offer new understandings of artist-led play architecture.
This research extends recent work in the critical reflection of how artists utilising the the tropes of sport and play bring new understandings of the public sphere that are distinct from orthodox approaches in the urban design field. It specifically argues how artists bring a crucial sensibility that balances new theories of ludic engagement and a heightened 'sculptural' aesthetic to bear on the making of temporary and permanent public spaces.
