Research statement
Background
An Act of Wonder is a short documentary about historian Dr Billy Griffiths and his research which engages with cultural heritage, Indigenous history, political history, archaeology, and seascapes. The documentary highlights emerging archaeology on Lizard Island, on the Great Barrier Reef and Griffiths work with the archaeologists and traditional owners. The project aims to achieve a holistic understanding of how Dingaal people engaged with their land and seascapes over very long time periods. The results have implications for the investigation of the human and natural past of the Australian continent as a whole.
Contribution
As an historian moving beyond discipline boundaries Griffiths seeks to understand deep time histories of Australia – of Australia as a cultural landscape. The deep past presses against the present in Australia as occupation dates are pushed back and emerging research entangles in a more complex manner with Indigenous knowledge. The video highlights Griffiths interdisciplinary approach and explores emerging research on Lizard Island that brings deep time history into frame. Through this work, Griffiths describes possibility for a profound transformation in understanding of Australian national identity.
Significance
The video highlights Griffiths innovative, interdisciplinary approach to history with a focus on Australian history, deep time thinking and foregrounding Indigenous knowledges with emerging archaeological research. This video articulates key elements of emerging research on Lizard Island and the interdisciplinary approach that engages with cultural heritage, Indigenous history, political history, archaeology and seascapes. The video has been widely disseminated across the Centre of Excellence for Australian Biodiversity and Heritage networks and media platforms with over 5000 views online.
