Research statement
Background
This project provides insights into the lived experiences of select community members of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands to gain detailed insights into Cocos Malay identity positions. These audio recordings include English and Cocos Malay language and provide potential for capturing language as marker of identity.
Contribution
This is a series of 12 audio recordings of oral histories of select community members of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands. Oral recordings are in the preferred language of interviewees - either Cocos Malay or English. This series captures authentic Cocos Malay language produced by various speakers.
Significance
This series of oral histories recorded in 2019, add to another set of oral histories recorded in 1984. Both are part of the collection in the National Library of Australia. They provide samples of authentic Cocos Malay usage at different points in time, as well as community perspectives. These recordings represent important historical resources, including interviews in Cocos Malay, a language classified by UNESCO as endangered. https://en.wal.unesco.org/languages/cocos-islands-malay
