Research statement

Background This two-part podcast explores the historical and aesthetic dimensions of dance in Hindi cinema, based on Dr Kishore’s long-term research and previous publications. Supported by a grant from Deakin University’s Asian Media, Culture and Society Network, the podcast was created to present accessible scholarly content to wider audiences. It integrates theory, historical analysis, and personal commentary, reflecting on key shifts in dance practices from early cinema to post-1990s Bollywood. Contribution The podcast series builds on Dr Kishore’s academic and creative work, including his book From Real to Reel and documentaries Dancing to the Tunes of Bollywood. Voiced, mixed, and edited by the researcher, the podcast combines archival knowledge with critical discussion. Part 1 explores how song-dance sequences shaped narrative structure, while Part 2 focuses on iconic performers and choreographers. The music, sourced ethically from libraries, enhances the audio experience and reflects cinematic influences. Significance The podcast advances creative research by translating scholarly analysis into public-facing digital media. It serves as a pedagogical and cultural resource that broadens the reach of South Asian screen studies. The accessible format enables cultural engagement beyond academic circles, particularly through YouTube. The series also showcases practice-based audio production as a research method, demonstrating how voice, sound design, and editing contribute to meaning-making in scholarly dissemination.
