This article explores the feminist changes that Sarah Bernhardt brought to the performance of Hamlet on the cusp of the c.19. It argues that Bernhardt did not follow the tradtional stage routes to success, but defied convention. It frames the play that the MTC was performing and was commissioned (as a long and short version) for its public program (also for VCE use).
