Research statement
Background
This radio documentary series presents the results of a year-long qualitative investigation documenting the experiences of homeless Victorians during the COVID-19 pandemic. Based on qualitative interviews conducted during and in between lockdowns from late 2020 to late 2021, the series contributes a critical ethnographic perspective on the impact of Victoria’s pandemic measures on unhoused Victorians, particularly lockdowns and emergency hotel accommodation. The series represents a collaboration between myself, an anthropologist, and community radio producers and former members of the Homeless Persons Union of Victoria, Kelly Whitworth and Pat Chiappalone.
Contribution
The series is based on extensive collaborative planning, research, and analysis by myself and my collaborators. Although final creative decisions rested with them, I was intimately involved in: a) drafting a funding application to the Regina Brindle Foundation; b) disbursing funds to interviewees; c) research design (co-drafting questionnaires and developing a joint consent process to participate in the radio series and to contribute subsequent academic publications); d) recruitment of several participants; e) interviewing (I can be heard on the series at several points); and f) data analysis, parsing transcripts and commenting on initial episode edits.
Significance
The series—and the research upon which it is based—represents one of the few detailed qualitative investigations of policy, service provision, and homeless Australians’ experience under the pandemic. It was recognised by an award from 3CR Community Radio, which aired the program. It was subsequently rebroadcast by the National Community Radio Network in January 2023. It was also supported by the well-respected Institute for Post Colonial Studies (a centre for independent scholarship directed by former Deakin anthropologist Dr Melinda Hinkson) which held a well-attended public event and panel discussion to promote the series in August 2022.
