Research statement

The Social Media Stories podcast explores, unpacks, and interrogates diverse facets of our social media world(s) through the stories of industry practitioners, students, researchers, and others. As creative practice-led research, SMS combines critical reflection with creative application; both narrative and analysis form the backbone of each episode, which explicitly draw on the concept of ‘story’ as a means of understanding the world through unscripted conversations. The significance of this research is that it harnesses a new media form in innovative ways to examine in reflexive ways both the form itself and various questions relating to digital communication modes, platforms, and practices. This significance is underlined by the podcast’s engagement with diverse experts in the field, while simultaneously questioning the conventional understanding of ‘expert’ and how this has been undermined in the digital age. These points are articulated within the broader research problem and creative endeavour that underpins all my current work in the area of Communication: How can different audiences be engaged with in order to communicate ideas in the digital age?
