Background This is a short documentary capturing an artist making a painting from start to finish. It was made on an old iphone with no other sound or film equipment. The film follows a three act structure and engages in distilling micro budget modes of production down to an absolute minimum. It was also an experimentation on the essay documentary form following the artist on a creative journey and asks the simple research question - Can a work of art be documented substantially on an iphone. Contribution The film follows artist Michael Vale as he creates a painting called 'Our Ghostly Crew' in the Melbourne lockdown of 2021. Once finished, the painting was entered into the Doug Moran, Australia's richest painting prize where it won. The film followed the process from artist studio to award ceremony. The film adapted technical production models to make the work – and engaged with traditional post production and music models to enhance the low-fi emergence of the footage. The nexus of iphone footage with professional sound editing, colour grading and sound mix provided an innovative insight to production models, documentation, and exhibition. Significance The acceptance of the film into mainstream local and international film festivals (On_Art- Poland, Revelation International Film Festival, Perth, and Melbourne Documentary Film festival so far) proves that these methods are suitable and can successfully sit alongside other films that are made by other expensive and traditional modes of production.
