Dr [Mohamed Haneef] is charged with recklessly providing support to a terrorist organisation for giving his mobile phone SIM card to one of the bombers in the latest UK bombing attempt. Haneef reportedly gave the man, who also happens to be his second cousin, the SIM card so he could take advantage of an "extra minute deal" offered by the O2 phone company. Limiting Haneef's access to legal representation is an invasion of his civil rights. That the treatment of Haneef can be condoned under the law is appalling. The offence with which Haneef has been charged also raises questions about the anti-terror laws. Unless Federal Police can show that Haneef supplied the SIM card to his cousin with the express intent of aiding their terror activities, then the meaning of the word "reckless" is so broad as to nail anyone who happens to be related to or in anyway connected with terrorists.
