This practice-based research project investigates the development of new dramaturgical possibilities engaged through the collaboration of public audience, public space, and professional actors and musicians in the contexts of an interactive sound instillation. The Plants Composed makes significant innovations in the field of sound studies and performance studies and seeks to extend "the Sonic Turn" (Curtin 2014,5). Research into theatrical dramaturgy continues to prioritise writing, acting, and directing and neglects sound.
Research statement
Background
I directed the live performance of the Playable Streets work The Plants Composed. This research project investigated the development of new dramaturgical possibilities engaged through the collaboration of a public audience, public space, and professional actors and musicians in the context of an interactive sound installation. Research Question: How might the performative engagement, both rehearsed and improvised, with a suite of new plant-based bio-instruments foster new dramaturgies, methods of instrumental engagement and approaches to improvised ensemble performance and how might these approaches create new perform for public spaces?
Contribution
Developed by Playable Streets and composer Cayn Borthwick, with the live component directed by me, the live works demonstrated how sophisticated sonic technologies, including DAW software, capacitive touch receptors and gestural technologies, can be harnessed to accompany live composed instrumental. My direction of the work extends my ongoing theoretical and practice-based engagement with sound and new sonic technologies. The work suggests new dramaturgical possibilities and contributes to new understandings of how sound is used in contemporary performance contexts by investigating how public audiences, actors and musicians can perform with new technologies.
