Research statement

This research provides a data-driven overview of strata insurance in Australia and New Zealand and examines the role of strata managers in the insurance process. Several research activities were undertaken to fulfil the aims of research including a detailed analysis of strata insurance data, two cross-jurisdictional legal analyses, survey questionnaires, and a review of strata management agreements. The findings of this project highlight the complexity of strata insurance and the reliance of third parties to navigate the insurance process. There are complex legal provisions requiring strata schemes to insure properties. Multiple levies, duties and taxes are also applied creating a costly expense for collective strata owners. This research is the first of its kind in Australia and provides a comprehensive overview of the sector.
