Research statement

Background Artificial Intelligence (AI) governance frameworks and principles guide organisations in the development, procurement, and use of AI systems. These frameworks encompass governance structures, policies, skills, practices, and mechanisms to manage AI effectively. This review analyses existing AI governance frameworks and principles, specifically for Australian law enforcement. Effective AI governance requires a holistic approach that considers both principles and practical implementation. This review identifies six core categories of principles essential for AI governance in law enforcement, highlighting key ethical considerations. Contribution Key headline principles: Accountability: Law enforcement agencies must maintain internal and external accountability for AI systems. This includes documented processes for human oversight and compliance with relevant laws and regulations. Transparency: Agencies should be open about the development, procurement, and use of AI systems. This includes clear communication about AI applications and their oversight. Legality, necessity, and proportionality: AI systems should be used reasonably and justifiably, ensuring they are necessary and targeted for specific purposes.
