Research statement

The PICAC Training Facility at Narre Warren is a state-of-the-art education building with cutting-edge building design, HVAC systems, and renewable energy used to achieve net-zero energy performance. The building is now accredited as net-zero energy. This building utilises a combination of renewable technologies, including geothermal, solar PV, and solar thermal, and it is the first building in Australia that uses building foundation screw piles for geothermal energy generation. In conjunction with the energy accreditation, this building was also commissioned and fine-tuned. The results show that: •tBetween March 2021 and June 2021, a total of 7,381 kWh of electricity has been saved for the HVAC systems (1,845 kWh of electricity-saving per month), compared with the same months in 2020. •tBased on the research, significant opportunities have also been identified for improving the geothermal systems, which is the main feature of this state-of-the-art building. •tOpportunities are also identified for improving the lighting and solar PV systems. In general terms, this research also provides clear evidence that building commissioning and fine-tuning delivers substantial operation cost savings as a result of improved energy efficiency.
