Research statement
Background
Limited research has been undertaken on violence towards transgender women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds in Australia. This is despite evidence of sexual and domestic violence rates being higher for women from culturally and linguistcally diverse backgrounds, and extremely high rates of both domestic and sexual violence against transgender women. This report sought to intervene in this area by undertaking: a) in-depth qualitative interviews with transgender women from CALD backgrounds 2) a photovoice project which facilitated women presenting their experiences using arts-based methods and culminated in an exhibition and 3) a survey.
Contribution
As described in the section above, the use of multi-methods research helped to develop a nuanced understanding of the experiences of violence for trans women from CALD backgrounds. The survey captured the prevalence violence towards this 'hidden population'. The use of arts-based methods was innovative and allowed different forms of expression of experiences and ways of coping. Interviews also helped to provide an understanding of the experiences of a very difficult to reach population and finally the practice guidelines help to support healthcare providers, many of whom have had very limited experience of providing healthcare to transgender people.
Significance
This report presents the results of a major ANROWS funded grant. ANROWS (Australian National Research Organisation for Women's Safety) is the leading government organisation dedicated to examining and addressing violence against women and children. As part of the project, guidelines for practitioners (e.g., GPs) were developed to provide best practice healthcare guidelines for working with transgender women from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.
