Research statement
Background
This report derives from a joint pilot project on ‘Multicultural Youth Digital Citizenship’ between
the Centre for Multicultural Youth and the Research Unit in Public Cultures, University of
Melbourne. The project is a preliminary investigation into the digital citizenship practices of
multicultural young people in Australia, primarily focusing on Melbourne. The research team was
made up of Dr Gilbert Caluya, Ms Tamara Borovica and Prof. Audrey Yue from the University of
Melbourne.
Contribution
This report innovates on previous literature on digital citizenship by creating a holistic definition of digital citizenship with multiple civic dimensions: social, cultural, political and economic. It uses this holistic model to examine young people's (18-25yo) online/digital civic engagement across multiple dimensions through an extensive online survey (n=175) and focus groups interviews (n=20).
Significance
On the basis of this report, I was invited to present findings at a national conference in Australia on digital citizenship at Deakin and subsequently to join a research team that won an ARC Discovery Project on the topic. The population of participants, extensive data collected, the findings and definition of digital citizenship are still influential several years later.
